view through the Porte d'Aude, Carcassonne

The Porte d'Aude is a 13th century fortification defending the west side of Carcassonne's old city walls.

The Cité de Carcassonne is the mediaeval walled city which stands on a hilltop above the more recent (and much larger) Ville Basse. It was heavily restored in the 1840s by the architect Viollet-le-Duc.

Carcassonne is in the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the south-west of France.
