ruined arcade of Basilica di San Giovanni, Siracusa, Sicily
These romanesque arches are part of the remaining ruins of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Siracusa, Sicily. Parts of the building date back to the 7th century, when it was built over the crypt of St Marcian, the first bishop of Siracusa, who was flogged to death in 254 while tied to a pillar which still stands in the crypt. Catacombs used for Christian burials lie beneath the basilica.
