interior of Pisões Loggia, Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra
The Pisões Loggia is a neo-Manueline structure which provides a side entrance to the gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal. Beneath its stone canopy, steps lead down to a (locked) gate leading onto the road (Av. Barbosa do Bocage) below. The stairwell is decorated with blue painted tiles as seen here.
The Quinta da Regaleira is the palace and surrounding four-hectare gardens built by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a Portuguese millionaire, between 1904-10. He employed the Italian architect Luigi Manini to create the neo-Manueline main house and to design the gardens which are filled with curious buildings, follies, grottoes, towers and tunnels. The design of the garden is said to represent an initiate's metaphysical journey through the cosmos towards enlightenment.
