the chapel in Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra

The chapel stands near the main house in the estate of Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal. It is built in the Manueline style and its design includes elements relating to Knights Templar and the Order of Christ. It is linked to the main house via a subterranean tunnel leading from the crypt.

The Quinta da Regaleira is the palace and surrounding four-hectare gardens built by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a Portuguese millionaire, between 1904-10. He employed the Italian architect Luigi Manini to create the neo-Manueline main house and to design the gardens which are filled with curious buildings, follies, grottoes, towers and tunnels. The design of the garden is said to represent an initiate's metaphysical journey through the cosmos towards enlightenment.
