portal of St John, Cathédrale de Notre Dame, Rouen

The current building of Rouen Cathedral in Normandy, France was begun in the 12th century and underwent repairs and alterations through to the 16th century.

 

The portal of St John is on the left (north west) side of the west front of the cathedral. It dates back to the 13th century. The relief carving depicts scenes from the lives of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.

 

On the bottom left is shown the Feast of Herod with the dance of Salome and the martyrdom of John the Baptist.
