detail of telamon on west porch, Ferrara Cathedral

The west porch of Ferrara Cathedral is supported by columns on either side, each with a telamon (human figure as a support) seated upon a lion at its base.

Ferrara Cathedral, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, was begun in the 12th century and its façade dates back to that original Romanesque design.
