unusual columns on south side of Ferrara Cathedral

Seen from the Piazza Trento e Trieste, the south side of Ferrara's Cathedral of San Giorgio has an arcade of shops running along at street level (just below this picture). Above this - seen here - is a gallery running the length of the building, supported by a series of columns - many of which are shaped in strange, twisted forms.

Ferrara is a town in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.
