interior of Church of St Catherine, Honfleur

The Church of St Catherine in Honfleur, Normandy, France is actually two buildings: the church proper (seen here) and a freestanding bell tower. The tower was built separately in order to reduce the risk of fire in case of a lightning strike.

The church was built in the second half of the 15th century immediately after the Hundred Years' War, and was constructed by shipbuilders (without using saws!)

It was originally built with a single nave - the one on the right in this photo; the second was added in the 16th century. The first nave bears a striking resemblance to the hull of a ship, which is perhaps not surprising given the background of those who built it.

In this picture the church is decorated with maritime signal flags, reflecting its connection to sailors and fishermen.
