south transept, Abbaye aux Dames, Caen

Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the Abbaye aux Dames - the Ladies' Abbey - in Caen, Normandy, France was built in the 11th century in the Romanesque style. It was begun in 1062 and completed in 1130.

The south transept combines Norman round Romanesque arches with later Gothic arches, as seen on the left of this picture.

The Abbaye aux Dames, together with its sister church, the Abbaye aux Hommes (Men's Abbey), were built on the orders of William the Conqueror and his wife Matilda in order to convince the Pope to rescind their excommunication (a result of theirs being a marriage between distant cousins).
