scale model of the Panthéon
The Panthéon was designed by Jacques-Germain Soufflot on the orders of King Louis XV, and built between 1758-90. It is an early example of neoclassical architecture. Originally intended to be a church dedicated to St. Genevieve, it was reassigned to be a mausoleum for the 'great citizens' of France, such as Voltaire, Marie and Pierre Curie, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola - and the architect Soufflot himself.
This scale model shows the elaborate triple-layered structure of the Panthéon's central dome, and is on display in one of the building's side chapels.
