cut but not covered
The London Underground train network started life as just the Metropolitan Railway running between Paddington and Farringdon Street. Rather than true tunnels, the 'cut and cover' method was used, with trains running just below the surface.
On this section of what is now part of the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, there is no 'cover': I held my camera up to look over a high wall on Leeke Street, just east of King's Cross station, revealing these metal braces with a train running beneath.
