stone lion in Knights' Hospital, Rhodes

This stone lion, holding the head of a dead bull between its paws, was carved during the Hellenistic period and stands in the courtyard of the Hospital of the Knights of St John in Rhodes Town. The Hospital is now a museum.

Construction of the Hospital was begun in 1440 by Jean Bonpart de Lastic, Grand Master of the Order of St John, but it was not completed until 1489.
