detail of sarcophagus of Ramesses III

The pink granite sarcophagus of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses III is in the Louvre museum, Paris. He reigned between 1184-1153 BC and his tomb was in the Valley of the Kings.

 

Carvings on the exterior of the sarcophagus portray scenes from the "Book of Amduat" which describes the sun's journey underground through the hours of night-time.
