fireplace dated 1635 in Portland Castle

The fireback in this fireplace shows the royal crest alongside the date 1635 and the initials "C R" - Carolus Rex, i.e. the King Charles I.

Portland Castle is an artillery fort, one of a series (called the 'device forts') constructed on the orders of King Henry VIII to defend against potential attack by the French and Spanish.

It was built between 1539-41 and, alongside its sister Sandsfoot Castle on the opposite side of the harbour, protects access from the sea.
