the 'harrowing of hell' - stained glass

One of an extensive set of medieval stained glass windows from the south aisle of Strasbourg Cathedral, which depict scenes from the Bible.

The 'harrowing of hell' or Christ's descent into the underworld is when he is said to have descended into hell to bring salvation to those souls confined there. The German text at the bottom - Got brach der Helle Tur - translates as 'God broke down the door to hell'.
