Renaissance carving on Maison Kammerzell, Strasbourg

Maison Kammerzell is a medieval half-timbered building in Place de la Cathédrale, Strasbourg. Reputedly the oldest building in the city (other than the cathedral), it was first built in 1427 and then renovated in 1467 and 1589. Its exterior is extensively decorated with Renaissance-style relief carvings and paintwork.

The view here is of a man holding a flower to his nose, beneath the German inscription "Der Geruch" - the scent. Beneath this are a scorpion, a dog and a faun with a bow & arrow.

Today the building is in use as a restaurant and hotel.
