corbels on Romsey Abbey

The current Romsey Abbey was begun in 1120 by Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester and Abbot of Glastonbury and built in stages through to 1240. Bishop Henry was the younger brother of King Stephen, grandson of William the Conqueror.

It is a Romanesque Norman building and is dedicated to St Mary and St Ethelflæda, a twelfth-century Abbess of Romsey.

Running around the upper levels of the exterior walls is a series of corbels carved into grotesque forms - animals, human faces, beasts, etc.
