statue of Bacchus at Ham House
This statue of Bacchus sits at the centre of the Cherry Garden in the grounds of Ham House, a 17th century stately home near Richmond, Surrey, England.
Bacchus is carrying a bunch of grapes in his left hand and a wine cup in his right, while his right knee leans on a wine barrel.
Ham House was built in 1610 and significantly remodelled in 1670 by the Duke of Lauderdale and his wife, the Countess of Dysart. Today the house is largely unchanged from that time and so it's a great example of 17th century Stuart architecture and design. The gardens were returned to their original 17th century plan in the 1970s.
