wine store in Herculaneum

This is the interior of a wine store in the ruined ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, near Naples in modern day Italy. This would have been a wine shop connected to the adjacent 'House of the Neptune Mosaic' (located at Insula V, 6-7).

Despite the city having been covered in volcanic ash after an eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius, the wooden fittings seen in this picture survived (albeit in carbonised form) - so this picture gives a clear impression of what the shop would have looked like in Roman times.
