bronze quadriga on Wellington Arch

This bronze sculpture of a quadriga - or four-horse chariot - stands on top of the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner in London. The arch itself was completed in 1830 (to commemorate the military victories of the Duke of Wellington whose residence, Apsley House, stands nearby) but the quadriga was not installed until 1912. It replaced a large equestrian statue of the Duke which was moved to Aldershot in 1883 when the arch was slightly relocated.

The quadriga was designed by Adrian Jones and is said to be the largest bronze sculpture in Europe. It shows the Angel of Peace holding an olive branch (the symbol of peace) while the chariot is driven by a small boy.
