Roman millstones in Pompeii
View of a bakery in Pompeii, clearly showing three millstones and the bread oven in the background. These are two-part units: the lower, static, conical section is called the meta while the upper, moving section is called the catillus. The grain was poured into the top of the catillus, which was rotated with wooden handles connected via the square holes visible in the picture.
The bakery is at regio VI, insula 6, house 17.
