the Caird astrolabe

Astrolabes were used by sailors to determine latitude. This example is thought to be of Hispano-Moorish origin, as it resembles other astrolabes known to have been made in Toledo around the year 1060. The name 'Caird astrolabe' refers to Sir James Caird who donated it to the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, where it is now displayed.
