Honoring 40 Years of Service

52 Weeks of Pix 2012 - Week 27 - Best viewed on black

Theme: Patriotism

Major General Stanley Newman (Retired) allowed me to photograph some of his service decorations for the 52 Weeks of Pix Patriotism theme. Stan is now 89 years old but looks like he is about 70. He enlisted in 1942 for "the duration, plus six months". Forty years later he retired.

He was a P-51 Mustang pilot in WWII, flying 57 missions in his plane "Azel" before the war ended. In Korea, he flew 100 missions in another P-51. During the Vietnam War, he flew a C-97 Stratofreighter and a C-124 Globemaster. Flying until retirement, he also flew the C-130 Hercules. At retirement, he was Special Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Military Airlift Command.

As part of a tactical reconnaissance group in Europe during World War II, he was not suppose to engage the enemy, except in self-defense. "So the saying in his squadron was, 'Let's go out and get attacked'."

Stan is Jewish. It wasn't until after the war that he learned about the atrocities performed at the hands of the Nazis. Members of his own family were among those killed, something he admits he will never get over.

Stan has been induced into the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame.

Shown above are his Major General Shoulder boards, his Command Pilot Wings, the Office of Secretary of Defense Identification Badge, and medals including the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross w/Oak Leaf Cluster and the Meritorious Service Medal (all on top row, left to right).

Also pictured may be his most treasured service item, his WWII US Army Air Corps "Fighter" cap.
