An Old Dog With A New Trick
52 Weeks of Pix 2012
Week 23 - Something Old
"OK, I may be an old dog but I've learned a new trick - how to be a dog. I lived most of my life as a stud dog isolated in a concrete kennel run with no human interaction. When my services were no longer needed, I was uncermoniously dumped on a rescue group. Since then, I've been in a couple of homes but not knowing how to act in a home environment, it hasn't worked out very well. One of the volunteers has another "old" guy like me and decided to take me on. With a little understanding on his part, life has become good. While I probably only have a couple of years left, they will probably be the best of this old guy's life."
I volunteer with the Sooner Golden Retriever Rescue in Oklahoma City. Casper (featured here) is one of our senior dogs. We adopt out lots of younger dogs but seniors don't get many adoption opportunities. It is rather cold to say, but they are typically "warehoused" in foster care for their remaining years once they come to us. But they are lovingly cared for. (BTW, I think Casper is now in a situation where his foster care could be classified as "permanent".)
