This antique map of The United States by James Wyld (the Elder) from 1819 shows the proposed state of Franklinia (or Franklin) in undeveloped territory between North Carolina and Tennessee. According to what I can find, the area shown for the state is not accurate and since this map was printed some thirty years after attempts to create the state ended, the lack of accuracy is particularly notable.
History Lesson: During the early days of the United States, after the revolution (Treaty of Paris - 1783) and before ratification of the US Constitution (1788), there was a movement in western North Carolina to create a separate state. 1) The move was to repay war debts to the new nation from North Carolina, which was rejected, 2) Settlers in the area were dissatisfied with governance from North Carolina so they tried to secede, which failed. 3) Settlers tried to go around North Carolina and went straight to Congress to create a state, which failed. 4) They then tried to create a separate nation, which failed. Eventually North Carolina moved in its militia and claimed control of the territory. There is much more to this story which can be found at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Franklin
