2016 - Disaster Relief - Fort Murray, Alberta
May 1, 2016, a wildfire broke out southwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta. By the end of the day of May 3rd, a mandatory evacuation order was issued for all 88,000 residents. Subsequently, 2400 properties were damaged by the fire. It wasn't until early June that authorities allowed re-entry into the city by residents.
The Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma sent teams to Fort McMurray to assist in getting residents back in their homes. I was there from late May through early June as part of a 30 person team. We assisted at a food bank that was attempting to reopen, we hauled out refrigerators and freezers that had become toxic due to the length of time they had been left without power and we started training for those volunteers who were staying longer to help with sifting the burned out residences for possessions that may have survived the fire.
