It appears www.flickr.com/photos/daviddmuir/ and I worked from the same inspiration. His, however, was for a macro group.
So, here's my attempt at photographing floating buttons. I think all the buttons should have overlapped the shadows to have made it more obvious what was being done. Ran out of time, however.
