I took a recent camping trip to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge just outside Lawton, OK. That's where I saw this big guy posing with a Scrub Oak just off the road.

 

The Refuge concentrates on preservation of three species: Elk, Bison and Longhorn Cattle. It is said the refuge has the largest stretch of mixed grass prairie in North America.

 

During the elk rutting season a local "friends of the Wichitas'" group run Elk Bugling Tours in the early morning and late evening. I called while on the way there to see if they had any open spots on that evening's tour. They had a single cancelation and I was able to get that spot.
