Brother and Sister - 1/2 Plate Daguerreotype by Langenheim
They are home and they are beautiful! Not only is the plate shiny and clean the broken apart case is now whole as well. I link below to an before/after view so that you can see the change. When I saw an "after" photograph from the conservator I realized that my assumption that it was "two sisters" was incorrect. The bigger child on the left is likely a boy once his side parted hair became clear.
William and Frederick Langenheim were German immigrant brothers who opened their Philadelphia studio on January 1, 1841. This is at the dawn of the daguerreian era in America.
We always knew it was special but were afraid that it was beyond saving. Thanks to a skilled and caring conservator this pair of siblings are beautiful again.
