Young Woman with Cloud Foreground - Faux Mask Effect Cabinet Card
I am posting the third of the six images we got at yesterday's antique show.
I am not quite sure if this should be called a faux decorative mask or if the cards with decorative masks should be called faux examples of this kind of foreground. I have seen and commented on some examples on other photostreams but this is the first obvious example I have found.
Johnson & Co. of Buena Vista, Colorado did not make or purchase a mask to add a decorative border to this photograph. Instead they built a foreground with cotton batting, artificial flowers, leaves, and grass to create the effect. This would seem to be more trouble and expense than a mask but it would be easier to print since it is a single negative.
The effect seems more awkward than a mask but I find the photograph with the ernest young woman against a lace background rather charming. I am including it with the set of printed masks because it seems to be trying for the same effect.
