Napoléon III Carte-de-visite by André Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri
These days we go to antique shows for exercise and amusement more than buying. On our recent trip to Texas we were surprised to find this "must have" CDV in one of the booths at a Dallas antique show. It is a hand colored photograph of Napoléon III by Disdéri. We know the oft-told story that the popularity of the CDV dates from the day Napoléon III stopped to have his picture taken on his way to war with Italy. We also know that the facts do not support this version. Still the association in our mind of the emperor and photographer was irresistible.
The clothing and props suggest that this was made at a setting with the family family in 1858/59.
