My Favorite Daguerreotype - Girl and Boy by Window *Brought to the top of my photostream
It is not possible to name one favorite daguerreotype from the over 150 daguerreotypes we have collected, but if pressed to pick one it could be this image. A young boy and girl (brother and sister) sit by a window. The inclusion of the window frame suggests it might have been made in their home or a temporary studio rather than a formal studio. The quality of the light, the calm demeanor of the children, and the wonderful detail all add to the charm. The checks of the girls dress and the little boy's freckles are incredibly sharp and clear. It is cased in an odd size (almost square) case and mat that is the height of a 1/4 plate.
If you are not familiar with The Daguerreian Society I suggest you check out their web site.
Looking back at the images I posted early in my flickr career I wanted to bring this one forward. It says so much to me about the power of the process. The clarity and immediate presence of these siblings takes my breath away. His freckles, the pattern of her dress, the quality of the light from the widow, their direct glaze are so sticking that they encapsulate many of the things I love about the daguerreotype!
