Train Time at Merrillan, WI

A friend and I had made a trek to Stevens Point in the fall of 1992 to catch the last days of the ex-Soo GP30's. My friend had intel on when the westbound GBW train was going to work at Merrillan, so we went out to check things out. Upon our arrival, we saw the power tied down short of the signal at the diamond where they crossed the CNW Adams line.

We were pretty happy to catch the train, but that happiness turned to excitement upon hearing the CNW was in town. They messed around with some cars on the interchange track, and then after getting back on their train, they took off for Altoona.

Seems more often than not, the train gods seem to conspire against the mortal railfan. Maybe they were off messing with them somewhere else and this one slipped by? I wasn't complaining. Everyone has their token GBW shot - this one is mine....

Less than a year after I caught this scene, I would go to work for the CNW out of South St. Paul and would train as a conductor (and eventually an engineer) over this same line, even stopping to set out some cars on that same track on a cold February, 1994 night....
