This is Bert Williams, in costume and character. Williams was the first black star of stage and screen, and the highest paid entertainer of his day (the early 1900's). Although often trapped in the guise of the minstrel, Williams was such a fine performer that he communicated the plight of the hapless, comic Negro as universal.
