Young Again

As I recall, it begins innocently enough ... as a young fella I received a hand-me-down Hanimex 35mm from my mom, who was then shooting semi-professionally, submitting images to our local and regional newspapers, as well as shooting weddings as a side business. Being behind the lens was a pretty serious departure for me, and certainly was more than a metaphor from being the cute subject of most of mom's photos -- toward striking out and beginning to make my own images.

Many tens of thousands of shots later, my own son and I are on a visit to Milwaukee's lakefront when we notice this big freighter easing its way into our breakwater.

My wide allowed capture of this moment ... another transition. The son of a photography enthusiast, with a hand-me-down piece of gear, beginning to make his own images.

To that end, this photo is like looking into a mirror that reveals a bit of my own past. Making this one of my favorite new images.
