Garden Orb Weaver

This beautiful red Garden Orb Weaver spider was almost ideally concealed within the fall foilage I cleaned away from my yard last weekend. So well concealed, in fact, that if not for the brightly colored egg sack in the background, which drew my attention to her ... she would likely have wound up in my wife's small station wagon ... which I used to haul the trimmings off to the recycle center. Fortunately, for everyone involved (including the spider -- who is now safely relocated into another backyard tree) she did not slip through undetected. Again, shot through venerable Canon 28-135 kit lens that came with the 40D body for its relatively short and very useful minimum focal length of 18". Next summer, I'll either upgrade to full on macro glass, or add a few extension tubes to the mix so that I can reduce the minimum focal length of my 70-200 f2.8L glass.
