Model of Lake Manapouri Power Station
To get to Doubtful Sound, we had to ride first across Lake Manapouri and then take a bus over the Wilmot Pass. This power station is located underneath the mountain. Manapouri's original river outlet was diverted, so now its water goes underneath to the turbines of the power station, and then lets out into one of the arms of Doubtful Sound. It's an astounding piece of engineering, built in the 1960s. Part of our trip involved them taking us down the 2-km curving tunnel (yellow) so we could see the turbine room.
