Putangirau Pinnacles, geology

One of the other cool things about the hike was studying all the rocks laying in the streambed. I really wish I knew more about geology. The largest version of this picture will show that the golden rock in the foreground has a distinct horizontal band of fossilized shells in it. There were hundreds of these fossil-studded rocks just lying all along the route.

(Above it, the twisted dark-brown shape is some kind of very, very old tree-trunk. Not petrified. And you can't really call it "driftwood", even if that's what it looks like, because it never drifted; "erosion-wood", maybe.)
