Rimutaka Hill Road
Taken from the top of the pass, 555 meters. In the full-size version of this pic, you can see the road clinging to the slopes fading in the distance. (Notice that, after the beautiful weather of previous days, more typical winter NZ weather has moved in.)
What you should know is, this is State Highway 2. (Parts of State Highway 1 are just as precarious, elsewhere.) It's 2 lanes, and in many locations along this route has no guardrails. (It does always have post-and-wire stock fencing, which will do exactly nothing to stop a car that goes over... as was illustrated to me when we rounded a curve and came upon a lot of yellow police tape, and an SUV-sized hole in the bushes over the side.)
