Day 108/365 - Dueling Light
When I set out today to paint with light, I expected a laid back and relaxed shoot. No heavy Alien Bees, No light stands or exposure tests. Just a simple flash light, a camera and a tripod. Well, boy was I way off. I sweated more today than I have in 30+ days. I also learned that drawing stick fighters is not nearly as easy as I would have hoped.
First things first, batteries. Of course the Triple A batteries in the LED flash light were flat thanks to my nephew Rylan. To top it, there were no batteries in the house. I even checked the fail safe source… all the remotes. They had all been harvested. I was left with no choice but to buy new ones. Off to Walgreens
With fresh batteries I headed to the old school parking lot to capture what should be a quick shot. I setup the tripod and with the Tokina 11mm-16mm lens and set it to a 30 second shutter. I ran out and started drawing what I thought would be a stick person. My first few attempts resembled nothing of a person. I could also see my white shorts. I threw on the black pants I had brought and tried again. Slowly I was achieving the desired affect and the stick fighters were taking shape. I had figured that if I traced myself I would get a more accurate figure. However, an extra appendage kept creeping in due to my lazy masking of the light during repositioning. Lets just say it wasn't PG-13!
With my camera batteries dangerously low I moved on to the evil stick fighter. With red gel over the light I increased the aperture one stop due to the light loss of the gel. I reversed the figure and with a little fumbling and a few attempts an evil red stick fighter took shape. I was now sweating, and tired. I packed it up and headed home to charge batteries and edit.
My goal was to do as little post work as possible. I combined both the red and blue fighter and dotted in some stars. Day 109 is complete.
In other news, the Palm Beach Post contacted me and wants to do a story on me and the project. This will be the second story I will have had printed and the Palm Beach Post is a larger newspaper than the scripts treasure coast, which printed the last story. I'm stoked about it. Next up… a major magazine!
