Breakup of Mackenzie River 24 May 2004

The breakup of ice on the Mackenzie each year is a big event in the Town of Norman Wells - one of the widest spots along the river and almost a mile wide. Artificial islands in the river on which oil wells take oil from deep beneath the river have to be able to withstand the onslaught of moving ice.
