// 52_Fifty-seven // Home . . . 23 years later

Well, it's taken me 23 years but I finally went back to Cornwall yesterday.

Me and a pal took a roadtrip, part escape from work and part rediscovery of my roots.

We went back to Helston, the town I lived in when I was little. It's a special place because I have my first memories there and a lot of happy memories too. We left when I was 8 (I think) and I've never been back since, despite wanting to.

I managed to find my way to the cottage we lived in, from there I remembered the way to school (which looked really small now I'm older) and we wandered around the boating lake my mum used to take us to.

It's changed some of course but not out of all recognition, even the museum is still there - we dug up old medicine bottles at the top of our garden and donated them to the museum before we left so we had a look round to see if they were still there but couldn't find them. That would've been cool!

From Helston we went to Penzance and St Ives, back to Helston and then home. A very long day but worth it. I won't be leaving it another 23 years before going back.

The photo was taken on Gwithian Towans beach, which is epically massive. It makes our beach in Weymouth look like a kid's sandpit. This is the kind of beach I remember from being a kid. Totally awesome.

I have to admit if I had half a chance I'd move back like a shot. It's not just the reconnecting with my past, the whole Cornwall lifestyle seems to be more laid-back and less rushed than anywhere else. It would be the perfect place to bring up the kids. And with locations like this I could get awesome photos easy!

Strobist info: SB600 at full power to camera left hand-held at head height. Fired using Nikon CLS.

On black - and don't trust the Flickr lightbox cuz it makes the photo look soft
