220/365 # Door to the ocean

Today we took a drive to Durdle Door, which you can see on the right hand side of the photo.

I wanted to try out using my flash outside, and see if I could remember any of Fwumpbungle's excellent tutorials on underexpsoing sky and composition on his and Disco~Stu's awesome new website photographywired.com/.

While you're there you should also check out the interview with Eric O'Connell, and follow the link to his website. The shots he took on 9/11 are amazing and very powerful.

The reason I wanted to get outside and use my flash is that it's a whole new way of thinking to get the correct exposure. So I tried to get the right exposure by adjusting the aperture rather than playing with shutter speed.

The SOOC shot came out a bit dark so I had to do a bit of work in Lightroom to get it looking how I wanted. I darkened the sky by using the grad filter tool and adjusted a combination of exposure, fill light and brightness to lighten the overall shot.

And then I tried this trick I learnt from B*Wag. In Photoshop, in the Filters menu there's a submenu called Other, and in there is an option called High Pass. No idea what it is or is meant to do, but it seems to work similarly to the Clarity slider in Lightroom. So I made a duplicate layer, set the High Pass level to about 5, used the Overlay layer blending option and it seemed to just finish the shot off nicely.

I've wanted to take a shot here for ages, since I started my 365. I haven't been here since I was a kid and my mum and dad brought us here for a day out in the summer. It really is a beautiful place when it's warm, but today it was really windy and damn cold. Still a lovely place to be - I remember swimming out and back through Durdle Door with my dad when I was younger.

Strobist info: SB600 at full power directed towards subject (me) to camera left at 70mm zoom. Sunlight from camera right.
