219/365 # Misery loves company

Don't read too much into either the title or the shot itself, I'm not about to jump off a bridge just yet. It's just that one flash lends itself well to moody with lots of black in them shots. At least it does to me.

You might have gathered that this last week has not been one of my best. Without going into detail, because I've spent enough time thinking about it and still am, I made a decision that I didn't really want to make but had to. It's made me feel very selfish and uncaring. But I still had to make the decision. This is the reason for the apology shot yesterday - those to whom it's directed to will know and hopefully understand.

On the flip-side, we had a bit of a windfall appear out of the blue yesterday which has basically paid off our Christmas debts and a bit more besides. So yay for flip sides.

And this photo today, it has no meaning or anything, and I was a bit strapped for an idea to be honest. But I'm a big believer in following your gut instinct, and it told me to use the print of Richey Edwards I have hanging on my wall (made for me by Jon for my birthday) in the shot just how you see it here.

This has got to be the first time I've used the full 18mm width of my kit lens inside, and although I don't get such crisp shots out of this lens compared to my 50mm it's a good change of pace to have a wider angle to play with.

I think what I was trying to do here was mirror Richey's face as in the print, and try to create an opressive mood. I really like my shadow in this and I think it makes the shot - now how often do you hear me say that? I'm interested to know what people with more experience using lighting think about that shadow though - does it enhance or detract?

What I don't like is our crap wallpaper showing - if this was my own house I'd strip the walls with a flamethrower.

And the title is a reference to me leaning against the wall with just the king or misery for company - Mr Richey Edwards.

Strobist info: SB600 at 1/4 power to camera right, bounced of the wall with the flash head angled slightly upwards. Placed on top of my TV so it was about 3 feet off the ground. Diffusion gel fitted over the flash with my home made gel holder.

For once I prefer this size to big on black
