Back to album

171/365 # Rock n roll scar

For a photo that's all about rediscovering my musical mojo this sure is depressing to look at. I've done a smiley shot yesterday though and I don't want to be accused of recycling old ideas, heh heh ;-)

This week I've rediscovered two things: my aforementioned musical mojo, and Oasis. In fact it was the rediscovery of Oasis that prompted the return of my musical mojo.

I'd kinda lost the love of music for a while, and after listening to a lot of metal over the last few months I found I needed a change, so I went through the albums on my mp3 player and put on Definitely Maybe, Oasis's first album.

Every time I listen to it it instantly takes me back fifteen years to when it was first released. It's an album of optimism, arrogance and attitude, and it lifts me whenever I listen to it. This is the band and album that made me want to play guitar in many ways. The album was full of great . . . no, classic songs that were playable by a novice guitarist. The band I was in all those years ago, we played probably 90% of Oasis's first two albums, plus a load of b-sides.

To me, Definitely Maybe has never got old or stale. Listening to it now, it still leaps out of the earphones as a glorious wall of sound underpinning some of the most classic tunes you're ever likely to hear. Individually each song is a force to be reckoned with, taken as a whole album it's just . . . perfect. The best debut album ever. To me anyway. It made an indelible mark on me, hence the title of this shot, which paraphrases the first track from Definitely Maybe.

It always makes me happy to know that I was there when Oasis were at their height, and at that time, make no mistake, they were fucking awesome. There's been no-one else since that has had such a profound effect on me. Bloc Party nearly did it, but they didn't influence the musical climate as much as Oasis did. Red Light Company have absolutely been my favourite band this year, and released my three favourite singles of the year, but still nothing matches just being alive, circa 1994 - 1996, the age of Oasis.

They never matched those first couple of years, the second album was great but no match for their first, and then they released Be Here Now - I tried to listen to it but had to turn it off halfway through. Since then they've released several albums, all of which mostly passed me by.

But that first album . . . made me wanna be a rock n roll star all over again ;-)

Not sure quite how this shot illustrates the above point. At the time I thought sticking an amp in the foreground and slouching moodily in the background would make an awesome, inner-sleeve-of-an-album kinda shot. I'm not convinced. It's one of those shots I kinda like, but today was all about waxing lyrical about my musical mojo, not talking shop about how-I-got-my-photo-to-look-like-this.

I've just realised I look a bit like a zombie in this shot . . .
