146/365 # Num3ers

This shot is a bit of a steal of this shot from my mate Fwumpbungle's year one 365. I prefer his. But I like this one too. Just not as much. Well, it's a different take on a similar idea. So maybe I shouldn't compare so directly. And I should stop. Talking in short. Sentences.

I was trying a couple of ideas out tonight, I was really pleased with how my day 144 shot turned out, so I wanted to have another go with the ghetto lighting. The other idea didn't work out (again!) but is something I want to try and capture so I'll keep it quiet until I either get it right or give up on it.

One reason why I'm quite pleased with this shot is that it's a combination of creativity and documentary. It's a sort of return to the ideals I started this project off with, before I got carried away with Photoshop and realised my life was waaaaay too boring to be able to get a relevant photo of it every day for a year.

This one's alluding to having spent the whole week so far punching numbers into the payroll system at work, because we've had to implement our pay rise. The one that was due in April. Yep, the April that we left behind half a year ago. Still, six months worth of back pay is a Good Thing this close to Christmas no?

And so I thought I'd combine what's been going on for me this week with a photo. And here it is. I finally worked out how the lens correction filter works in Photoshop, so I used it on the numbers and used the fade option thing in the edit menu to get the 3D-ish effect. Oh and the numbers are meant to be backwards, it's meant to look like you're looking through the inside of a monitor out to me looking into the monitor y'see.

While I'm typing loads, I'm looking for some advice/tips/someone to state the obvious to me.

I've noticed a lot of my contacts, particularly crustydolphin, Geekgirly and rebecca * have this knack of getting the most amazing detail and clarity in their shots. I find this quite difficult, so I'm wondering - apart from the fact they're massively talented, is it because they use proper off camera lighting? Is it the lenses they use? Or am I just trying to make up excuses for my shoddy camera skills?

The reason I'm asking is because the photos I take where I've used ghetto lighting usually come out a lot sharper than the ones where the light source is just the strip light in our kitchen. Which made me think that it might be the light source that makes a difference. I'm sure that I can get just as clear shots with my D50 as I could with a D80 so I know it's not the camera that's lacking . . . just wondering y'know? The two skills I want to come out of my 365 with are awesome Photoshop skills and the ability to take a great photograph, without the need to mess with it too much afterwards.

The Photoshop skills are coming along but the ability to take a great photograph is not as great as I'd like. Although I think today's shot came out pretty sweet.

Finally, I promised my mate Jon I'd let you all know about the new group he's started. It's for sports fans everywhere and it's called 4:45pm. The chance to upload your immediate state of mind post-match, race or innings. Go check out the group for more details, I think it's a great idea for a group!
