127/365 # Clone wars

I've been planning this shot for most of this week as I don't think my back garden would've been big enough to do it any justice.

I suppose a playpark isn't the most appropriate place to break out the lightsabers either, I should've paid a visit to the local industrial estate cos I can think of the perfect location there.

Never mind, I still like this shot. The jumping me is for real, and it took me bloody ages, two jarred knees and a bruised heel to get. Even the me lying on the ground took like four shots to get right.

I made the lightsabers by using the gradient tool in Photoshop set to 'Reflected Gradient', inverting the results so that I had a thin strip of white and then setting the layer blending mode to screen so the black on the lightsaber layer didn't show up.

Then I had to cut a section of the light strip to a new layer, mess around with the colour balance (which wasn't worth it in the end because of the treatment I used) and rotate it to make it fit into my hand. Then I had to erase the bits of the lightsaber that obscured my hand. Finally I added a bit of gaussian and motion blur to the lightsaber and used the smudge tool to create the tips of the lightsaber.

The second lightsaber (the one being held by the lying down me) was created using the same process as above except that I had to distort it a bit to make it wider at one end to create some kind of perspective and make it look a bit more authentic.

I'm not sure it looks quite as 'real' as I wanted it too but it's close enough, I'm looking after Joe and Ben right now and going out tonight so time isn't on my side and this is a bit of a rush job. A lightsaber with a proper handle would look way better.

It's kind of a companion to my day 64 365 and in a complete stroke of luck I'm wearing the same t-shirt in both shots! I really like my day 64 shot and was secretly gutted that it didn't make it into Explore - it got like 100 views in an hour when I first uploaded it so I thought it'd be a shoe-in. Obviously the magic donkey's more of a Battlestar Galactica fan.

EDIT: Explored #28!

Trust me it looks better bigger
