103/365 # Bedtime stories
Another first tonight - I managed to combine a bit of quality family time with Joe and my 365!
This was just what I needed after work, my boss moves to her new office next week so for the next eighteen months or so I'll be running the office. Over the last week or two I've been introduced to the manic juggling act that my boss performs on a daily basis - there's so many things going on at any one time it's difficult to keep up with it all!
It's hard work and I always have to be aware that one change in the system can affect a myriad of other processes: it's making my head spin. I'm not looking at this negatively though, by the time my boss comes back from her secondment the experience we'll all have had in her absence will be invaluable. There's only one way to learn and that's to get stuck in and get your hands dirty.
That's enough about work, I spent nine hours there today and it'll be the same tomorrow so the less time I spend thinking/talking about it at home the better!
I was going try something out tonight using rear curtain flash and a long exposure. Something like this shot by Stephen Poff but with less finesse and remote triggers ha ha! Oh and I had an idea that didn't involve twatting myself in the face (err, this won't make sense unless you've seen Stephen's shot)! I steal ideas from Stephen all the time (he has so many great ones!) so I've thought of a different idea of what to do in the shot.
In the end I chickened out of it because I was worried that I wouldn't be able to pull it off and by then it'd be dark and I'd have to do another ghetto lighting shot.
I thought it might be nice, seeing as I'm trying to move away from Photoshop for a while, to capture a moment of daily life in the Daz household. I don't have enough of these in my 365.
So this is me and my boy Joe doing a bit of reading before his bedtime - he was reading me the story I might add, not the other way round.
I took nearly sixty shots of us sitting there reading, most were sent straight to the recycle bin because I had to use a fairly long shutter speed (bad light) and Joe kept wriggling and getting all blurred.
I just triggered the shutter at random moments to try and capture something natural. I didn't want it to look set-up or pre-prepared. From the point of view of the approach I took to this shot it's quite different from my normal method of having an idea and spending time setting things up. Maybe it's a blessing that I'm short of ideas at the moment? It gives me a chance to capture something a bit more real.
It's not the greatest shot in the world, it's a bit out of focus if you look closly and there's a bit of motion blur where Joe just couldn't sit still. And to be honest my living room ain't the most photogenic of rooms. But it's a moment in time that's precious to me and I'll always have this shot to remember it.
My boys won't be this small forever and part of the reason I want to get good at taking photos is to capture them while they're small so in the future me and Lydia can look back and have some amazing photos to look at.
I'm still going to try the rear curtain flash idea at some point, now I have an idea I'm reluctant to use it - like when you have spare money y'know? And there's so many things you want you can't spend the money because you don't know what to buy?
For now, a photo of me and my first-born will do just fine.
Mental note: get more 365 shots with Ben in them! Poor lad must think I'm neglecting him.
