89/365 # Pin light

The D50 has a fully charged battery again so I'm back using it today - and thanks to everyone who helped me figure out how to make the camera focus on what I want it too - I think I've got the trick of it now.

This shot is something I've been meaning to do for a few days. I saw this shot by Mr Puma - you should check out his stream, he's got some wicked awesome shots on there.

What I really want to do is get outside and put the D50 through its paces, but I'm (a) too lazy, (b) don't want to go out before the kids have gone to bed because I'll miss them and (c) the weather's not good. Well, it's been sunny today but quite windy and I don't even want to think about putting the D50 on a tripod and it falling over . . . *shudders*.

OK, so instead of going out and exploring, I played it safe and shot against a plain wall for lots of fun with textures. And levitation.

So this is two shots, one of the pin (well, there were three pins but I went with one in the end) and one of me. I had to move the pin round to get it in the right place.

I used the magic wand selection tool on the pin but still had to zoom right in and very carefully go round the edges. The edges still looked too sharp and unrealistic so I used the motion blur filter just to smooth things out a bit, and dodged around the outside to get rid of any lighter areas of the edge of the pin. It took ages!

Then the usual playing around with layers ensued until I had a background a little less boring. And that was about it for Photoshop. It's been through Lightroom to boost the blues, exposure and clarity (and a vignette).

The shot itself I'm actually quite happy with. I followed Disco~Stu's advice and used another object to manually focus on before getting in the shot myself. Hopefully you can see that my hand is in focus and the rest of me is slightly out of focus - this is not a mistake! It was a bit of practise to see if I could get the camera to do as it's told.
