Yogya silver bowl - Indonesia

Sold.

This extraordinary large Yogya silver bowl - diameter 26,5 cm, height 12,5 cm - is executed in a very peculiar design.

Clockwise, a big blooming flower emerges from behind a leaf, and left of the flower another very large and elaborately sculpted leaf emerges with flower buds erupting from underneath. The design is repeated 4 times: all flowers differ in shape as well as all the leaves.

The overall appearance of the design is organic, bold and sculpted; the ususal clear symmetry characterising Yogya silver is not really apparent here. I believe this could be a test made for Mrs. Van Gesseler-Verschuir. Though the bowl is technically not the most refined, the artistic design more than makes up for this. A slightly comparable bowl is in the collection of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam: collectie.tropenmuseum.nl/Default.aspx?ccid=451345

I want to thank antique dealer Kasper Tiggeloven for the opportunity to buy these 2 wonderful Yogya silver items. When in Amsterdam, do visit his stand B1A @ the Antiekcentrum Amsterdam: www.antiekcentrumamsterdam.nl
